Counterphrases, a new video on the web

21/11/2016

0 Commentaires

Counterphrases is an evening of cinema with live music.  Ten shorts films by Thierry De Mey set to music by ten composers with ten danced phrases choreographed by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and performed by Rosas. These ten films encapsulate the best of De Keersmaeker and De Mey’s collaboration: twenty years of assiduously practicing variation, of perpetually inventing algorithms, filters, and formulae that twist movement and space according to the capricious mathematics of pleasure. All of this is filmed – O Belgitude! – in exquisite flower-filled gardens and under impressionistic drizzling rain.
The ten composers of Counterphrases will each work on one of the variations separately, after the films have been edited, and will be completely unaware of what the others are doing.

The idea of this performance comes from Claudine Brahem whom imagined the amazing and very particular musical machines played by Jean-Pierre Drouet.
It's a composite piece constructed of excerpts from Conversations (1985), Enumérations (1988), Tour de Babel (1986)  and Eclipse partielle (1985).
We let you enjoy the films of Zapo Babilée and if you want to read more information about the genisis of this piece, Rendez-Vous on our page Notices

Héloïse Demoz, a doctoral student at Paris 8 Vincennes Saint-Denis University, imagined and organized this film session at the Amphi X of the university.
Thanks to her for offering us those wonderful original versions of "Toucher" by Vinko Globokar and "Le corps à corps" by Georges Aperghis.

Tourbillons, performance for solo voice imagined in 2004

2/3/2016

0 Commentaires

First, Aperghis wrote 2 concert cycles for solo voice  - Six Tourbillons (1989) and Cinq Calmes plats (1992) - for the singer and actress Martine Viard.
Then, he asked Olivier Cadiot a French writer to imagine in between the musical pieces some "prières d'insérer", prayers to insert.
Cadiot says about his work :
"I had to write fragments of texts said by a singer on stage, to write to make her talk.
I did not write for the music but for a voice and that's very different. For the private life of a female singer."
She talks. She sings. She talks and sings. She talks to imaginary persons. A sweet and comic chaos in her head that we invite you to discover.

Video : "Retrouvailles" (2013) — a performance for 2 percussionists

This film was made on an idea of Harry Vogt, director of the Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik Festival.

"2 men meet,  We see they already know each other.  Fragments of the everyday life gesture (to bang in the back, to shake hands, to drink in the name of common memories, etc).  Syllables and musical phonemes intelligible for them but not for the audience.  This short performance is a construction of situations that seem real but which lose their reality because of voice processing and cutting gesture". G.A - 2013

Richard Dubelski and Christian Dierstein - percussions, Marc Mahn and Marc Faßbender – Cameras, Stefanie Dey and Bernhard Wohlmacher – Lightings/Equipment, Marc Mahn and Harry Vogt – Editing/Direction.

A shot in the dark (2011, ICE Ensemble)

Georges Aperghis: A Shot in the Dark (2011) from ICE on Vimeo.

Composer's Notes An impossible portrait of a fluctuating woman (instrument & voice) who slides from one state of consciousness to another, like somebody who is looking for their way through the dark, like an endless derivation, pulling the instrumental ensemble into its vocal labyrinth.
Sequences appear, like sonic images. The voice traverses these spaces, provokes them or undergoes them, or plays with them in a versatile way. No longer can you tell whether it's the voice or the instruments that lead the dance. One seems to be following the errand ways of the other, through contrasting fragments that succeed each other in a non-linear fashion.
